Worcester Hop Shop, Grain Over Sands and the quest for better brewing value
If you've been brewing with Worcester Hop Shop for a while, you'll know that keeping all-grain brewing affordable has always been part of what we do.
That isn't changing. When we took over Worcester Hop Shop in February 2026, we didn't want to lose the things that had made it popular over the years. The traditional recipes, the familiar kits and, perhaps most importantly, the value for money.
At the same time, there's a little more to the story.
Grain Over Sands actually came first for us. We set up Grain Over Sands Brewing Supplies and opened its online doors at the end of June 2025, before the opportunity to take on Worcester Hop Shop came along.
So when we eventually took over WHS, we weren't starting another online shop from scratch. We were taking an established and much-loved homebrewing business under our wing.
As former WHS customers ourselves, the thought of seeing the shop disappear completely wasn't an option — and at the time, that was a real possibility. We saw an opportunity to become custodians of something that had already built a history of its own, while giving it the care and attention needed to take it forward. I think we've acheived and learnt a lot in the last 7 months.
Taking something like Worcester Hop Shop on also meant making some difficult decisions in those early days. Some products had to be put on hold while we worked through the stock and decided what we wanted to bring forward. Leaf hops were one of those things.
We're pleased to be bringing them back now, with a range of British leaf hops and some of the traditional all-grain kits that use them beginning to reappear, initially through Grain Over Sands. It's another example of how we're taking what makes WHS special and moving it forward, while keeping the WHS ethos and giving it a more modern slant.
That means putting our own mark on Worcester Hop Shop where we think we can improve things, while upholding the traditions, recipes and value that made WHS worth preserving in the first place.
We're now bringing the two sites closer together, while giving each one its own character.
Think of the two websites as extensions of each other. Each has its own character, but they're both part of the same brewing family. Same people, more choice.
Worcester Hop Shop remains the home of a large range of traditional all-grain recipe kits, with our continued commitment to keeping those kits affordable. Grain Over Sands gives us more freedom to introduce new recipes, different ingredients, leaf hops and other brewing products, as well as offering a slightly different delivery structure. It also gives brewers the option to build their own recipes using our recipe builder, so you can choose exactly what you want rather than buying ingredients in quantities you don't need. We'll build the kit for you and send it out ready to brew, helping to reduce the leftovers and waste that can come with putting a recipe together yourself. As a brewer myself, the recipe builder was something I really wanted to bring to Grain Over Sands when I set the site up. You could say it was my baby, and it's something I'm really excited about.
GOS also gives us a little more freedom in how we present our products. Being the newer site, we can build product pages around the level of information and detail we'd like to give today's brewer, including brewing notes, recipe information and background about the beers and ingredients. WHS has a much longer history and an established website structure, so bringing that same level of information across takes a little more time. Where we can improve the information and presentation on WHS, we will continue to do so.
You may therefore occasionally find similar products on both sites at slightly different prices. That's not necessarily because one is simply more expensive than the other. The kits may contain different ingredients, different yeast or different packaging, and the postage structures are different too.
For example, one kit might use a manufacturer-packed yeast on Grain Over Sands while the equivalent WHS kit may use a different yeast that has traditionally been repackaged. The recipes may look similar on paper, but they're not necessarily the same product. However, as homebrewers ourselves, we see this as giving you more choice.

The dark side isn't so bad...
Don't worry though — you won't be joining the dark side.
Well... perhaps just a little.
The important thing is that whichever side of the website you find yourself on, the aim is the same:
May the froth be with you. Great beer you shall have.
More choice. Great beer. Sensible prices.
We're homebrewers too, and we know that the cost of brewing can add up quickly. We don't think every all-grain recipe kit needs to become an expensive purchase just because it contains good ingredients.
So whether you're a long-standing Worcester Hop Shop customer or you've discovered Grain Over Sands more recently, our commitment is the same: to give homebrewers as much choice as we can, while keeping the price as sensible as possible.
And we're always listening. If there's a beer you'd like to see turned into a kit, a hop variety you think we should stock, or simply something you think we could do better, we'd love to hear from you. Get in touch and let us know. sales@worcesterhopshop.co.uk
Two websites. One brewing family. And hopefully plenty of good beer along the way.

Cheers Steve & Kath
